Chris Shiflett was born on May 6, 1971, and spend most of his childhood in his hometown of Santa Barbara, California. Apart from music, he was also a promising young soccer player and also played in AYSO (American Youth Soccer Association). He started showing an interest in playing guitar at the early age of 11 and was already a member of a band by 14. His older brother, Scott Shiflett is a musician as well and they have collaborated on various projects. Chris says that he had a stress-free childhood where his parents supported the choices he made and helped him through the teenage years. He says his major inspiration for picking up the guitar is Ace Frehley, who is the guitarist of the famous rock band, Kiss. His other inspirations include bands like Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Nugget.
He went to Santa Barbara High School but could not graduate due to his disinterest in studies. Chris made it to the beginning of 12th grade but decided it was enough. He mentioned in an interview that he dropped out of high school because it got in the way of his music. He did not like the idea of having a 9-5 job and decided to do something that he cared about. Chris proves that people don’t necessarily need a degree to be successful in life. If you follow your passions, you won’t have to fear to go into work. After leaving high school at the age of 18, his mother got him a job at the probation department which was his first real job. Before that, he used to work jobs like dishwashing, and, gardening.
He saved enough money working various jobs to buy a new amp and move to Los. He saved enough money from this new job to buy a new amp and moved to Los Angeles. Dropping out of high school led to a chain of events, turning him into one of the most influential rock guitarists of his time. Chris was a part of other punk rock bands like “No Use for a Name” and “Me First and the Gimme Gimmies”. Chris Shiflett was already a part of “No Use for a Name” when he auditioned for Foo Fighters, who were looking for a new guitarist at the time. He ignored the audition call from the band, “Guns and Roses”, and chose Foo Fighters instead as the next step in his career, playing for them since June 1999.
Chris may have gone a little mellow following his change to country music but still rocks the stage during Foo Fighters performances. He also has a podcast where he interviews people he admires and it has been very well-received by the fans. He says he loves that job and still inspires young musicians to go ahead and follow their dreams through his platform. Chris says country music requires patience with a sense of poetry and that’s the reason he wanted to try it out in the first place. It was difficult for him to understand the contrast between the two different genres but has learned more about it with the passing years. The rock star has admitted that his favorite song to play with fellow bandmates is, “All My Life”. He later joined another group called the Real McCoy but it split after only a few gigs.
Currently, at 47 years of age, Chris is still rocking and frequently comes out with new albums. He has managed to captivate his fans with a charismatic personality accompanied by instrumental talents. He was once arrested at 16 but thankfully his mother was very supportive and helped him through the entire process. Although he mentions drugs, smoking, and alcohol a lot in his past songs, he says he’s not much of a smoker himself. He gave up that part of his life after settling down and has since changed a lot of aspects in life. Following your dreams is not easy but Chris often jokes that he did not have to work as hard as others and always had jobs to support him.
Chris Shiflett has three kids, Eamon Riley, Liam John and Dashiell Ellis with his wife Cara Shiflett. He says he regularly takes his kids to soccer practice on his minivan. He is supportive of their career choices just like his parents were. Chris feels proud that they have taken an interest in soccer as it was an important part of his childhood. Chris and his family live in a nice neighborhood and he seems to have left his rock star lifestyle behind him.
His work and hobbies correlate and that’s what makes his life so enjoyable. Chris recently sold 20 guitars from his personal collection in July of 2018 by putting them up for sale on Reverb.com. The most popular guitar on his list was the 2002 Gibson Firebird V Reissue which he played in the video, All My Life. The reason he sold these precious instruments was to find a new home for them as they were not being used at the moment. He wanted someone who could use them regularly so the instruments wouldn’t get dusty and go to waste. He has been very vocal about his transformation from punk rock to country music in recent years. This started as a side project but it has gotten bigger over the years with Chris coming out with a couple of albums.
He has been with several other bands on his journey, such as, Viva Death, The Real McCoy, Chris Shiflett, and the Dead Peasants and one which he formed with his brother, Scott called Jackson United. The most important one though is his collaboration with Foo Fighters which went on to win 11 Grammys out of more than 25 nominations. Apart from the Grammys, the band has won several major awards in the musical field. They have since gone on to sell over 12 million albums in the United States alone. Chris went on several tours with the band and recorded a bunch of albums after their collaboration.
His net worth as of 2019 is $6 million, most of which he accumulated by playing in different bands over the course of his career. The most successful band that he was a part of is, however, Foo Fighters whose estimated income in 2018 as estimated by Forbes Magazine was $48.5 million. Chris still releases albums on a regular basis that has become his primary source of income. Shiflett also has a podcast that he says is exciting and brings in some extra money. He loves traveling to different places and his favorite ones to visit are Madrid and Montreal. The guitarist has a nice house in a good neighborhood with all the required facilities to accommodate his family. Shiflett has earned enough to take care of himself whilst enjoying a decent life. After giving up his old partying ways, he has to spend very little money on his lifestyle.
