Hello Everyone,

First of all, sorry for the irrelevant comment. Since this is a Bollywood lover's blog, I stopped by to tell everyone about Desilassi.com.

If you like Bollywood, then go visit for sure. Spend a little time to read what they have to offer.

Me? I am just helping spread the word.

Cheers.

This is a really interesting review, thanks - the film sounds great, and I think I will have to find it... have never watched a Tamil film. I must admit that I love Madhavan though (did you just call him ''chipmunk-esque''?? - gasp - am I thinking of the same Madhavan - the one from 'Ramji Londonwaley' and 'Guru'?). LOL

I've seen only 2 Ratnam movies - 'Dil Se' (which I found fascinating, impressive, troubling and distasteful all at once) and 'Guru' (which I found inspiring and rather interesting to analyse - recently reviewed it on my blog). This might be my next one.

PS 'A kiss on the cheek' definitely sounds nicer... LOL

I don't think the film was ever released with an official translated English title, so 'Kiss On The Cheek' can work just as well - and sounds nicer I think ;)

I understand your point about the Tamil industry's negative image being a stereotype, but I think it's one that is propagated by themselves just as much as it is by others. I do definitely agree though that there is plenty of good work to be found if you know where to look. Of the titles you mentioned, I've managed to catch Virumandi, Rainbow 7/G Colony, Anniyan and Manmadhan. Of those four, Virumandi was the only one I'd rate highly, but I will endevour to check out the other five as well. 8)

Some of my own favourite Tamil films would be Anbe Sivam, Hey Ram, Minsara Kanavu, Kandukondain Kandukondain, Kushi, Ullam Ketkume, Iruvar and Bombay.

Tamil cinema is not always about low budget crude movies, with aging stars and old-fashioned messages. That has been a negative and propagated stereotype; like bollywood "singing and dancing around the trees". Yes, there are problems with the Tamil film industry but this is slowly being wiped out thanks to the recent surge of low budget films which focus on performance and storylines from a South-Indian working class perspective.

Recommended Tamil films would be; Raam (2004), Rainbow 7/g Colony (2005), Kaadal (2005), Pudupettai (2006), Dishum (2005), Manmadhan (2005), Virumandi (2004), Anniyan (2005), and even the recent low budget satire 23rd Pulikesi (2006).

Although these films aren't perfect they slowly represent a more mature side of Indian cinema. It’s just a shame that they don’t get more exposure.
