Yes, completely. I saw the theatrical cut on first viewing and thought it was a pretty good sci-fi - the SE changed that view to consider it a near-masterwork (albeit slightly commercial, as is almost always the case with Cameron's feature work). I'm looking forward to picking this up on one of the HD formats at some point in the future.

The Abyss is actually a much more accomplished film in its 'special edition' form that the original theatrical version. The re-edited footage substantially alters the finale, making it so much more effective. In taking out around 30mins of footage from Cameron's original vision, the theatrical cut felt almost unfinished, and now, whenever I watch The Abyss, it has to be the special edition.

Got to disagree with you on The Abyss - the footage inserted into the SE substantially altered certain aspects of it, for example, the tidal wave threat against mankind added a completely different perception of the aliens themselves. It's one of the few extended versions that was worth sitting through the additional minutes, particularly these days when every successful film and its dog is re-released in an extended cut.

I'd certainly agree with Match Point, however: I loved it!

Solaris (remake) is the kind of thing that average sci-fi fans probably won't really go for I'd imagine. It's more like an exploration of the human soul than space itself. I thought it was great personally.
