This is a bit of a favourite of mine, and if you enjoyed this, it's worth seeking out Romanek's feature debut from twenty-odd years ago, Static, with Keith Gordon. Sadly, it never made it to DVD but there are VHS rips floating about on the evil interwebs. It has the same sense of loneliness/outsiderishness about it.

Apparently, there were some decent scenes that Romanek cut for pacing, including one with Sy explaining red eye in a predatory fashion (much like the scene already extant where he defines "snap shot"): apparently, he was holding these over for an SE DVD of the film, but it was never popular enough to warrant it.

The only thing that's slightly wrong with the film, imo, is the climax, and the rather hackneyed notion about patterns of abuse repeating themselves et cetera: Sy is already so well defined a character that you feel for him without needing that ladle of cliche poured over him.
