You may have heard but there's a blu-ray megaset in the works planned for release towards the end of the year - the great bonus this time (apart from improved 1080p transfers) is the fact that we will finally see Conquest... in its unrated cut, around 8 minutes longer. This should surely be the ultimate Apes movie set (rather than that strange looking head that came out a while back).

Yeah, the final one could have been much better, with some raw ideas that had potential, but the studio's dubious objective got in the way of any beneficial developement.

A great sequel; I'm in agreement that the first three sequels were all surprisingly good and the final one was a stinker.

The studio's 'heart' just wasn't in the right place for Battle... I really don't think they treated the series with as much respect as they should have, particularly after the first movie earned them a nice little packet during a time of hardship.

I also think 'Beneath' is a pretty good movie and stands up well enough as sequels go. I guess most people would agree that the series was doing ok up to and including 'Conquest'. Every one of those had something interesting to say at least.
'Battle' is quite simply lame and the less said about it the better IMO.

You're right, Gavin. In fact I'd extend that to the first four Ape movies. The studio didn't help the problems with the movies by diminishing the budget for each film (the first one started off with over 5 million, the last one had just over 1 million), despite the continued success of the series. The only one that I don't have a great deal of respect for is Battle..., partly because it was aimed more so at family/kid markets (a disappointment after the comparative brutality of Conquest...) plus its ideas weren't of a high quality.

It's easy to suggest this is just B grade science fiction but at least the first three "apes" movies tried to do very different things - unlike most sequels today.

In any case, it's responsible for the "Glory be to the Bomb" lines... Cinematic history in themselves.
