Downloading teh films!!!111

You know? A few years ago, if you had said to me that the main way for delivering video media would be via the interweb I would have laughed at you and gone and purchased 10 more DVDs of crap films just to spite you. It seems though that I may well have to have a radical rethink. What has changed my views? Well, I’ve not actually bought that many films recently as I wait patiently for either Sony or Toshiba to come out on top in the race for my 1080i/p viewing. But during this time I’ve managed to see just as many films ( –> :suspect: <–). This online delivery (as I’ll call it) is actually not too bad. As hard drives get bigger and phatpipes get, well, phatter, this can only get better. I am already a big fan of the Steam platform for games delivery and many of the services provided by Sony and MS on their current gen consoles utilise similar routes to our living rooms.

Of course, I will still be buying loads of Blu-Rays (I mean, erm, BR or HD-DVDs :sigh: ) but my views on the future have changed.

Time will tell but what the heck am I going to do with the 600 DVDs in the lounge?!

Even though I love the idea of intarweb delivery for my movies so I can watch as they are released, I still love the physical look of my DVD collection, its there, it’s safe and I can rewatch when I want. It’s pretty much a permanent backup sitting in my living room.

I can’t see myself storing terrabytes of data on multiple harddisks as there is nothing to look at. If the studio’s did a rental service to download the movie for a decent fee, then yes I would use it.

I hate the idea of downloading, but it is unfortunately the future :(

Nice look to the blog, by the way! :)

I too find myself rather attached to physical formats - I’ve recently developed a liking for steelbooks. I suspect the generations that didn’t grow up with formats like vinyl, vhs etc (and the wee rituals that went with playing these format) will adapt much easier.

I’m sure I read that Microsoft home media server (like that which powers the BT Vision platform) and server storage boxes will be the next thing to be offered by the big broadband companies who are keen to both standout in a saturated market (they already give away pvr’s and laptops) and to push THEIR VOD and rental downloads.

I did download a large movie today (a fan-edit of the Matrix sequels, nothing naughty) - and via rapidshare on an 8-meg connection it was coming down the pipe at 800 kb/s. If the download formats can be scheduled that fast overnight to show up on a home media server the next day, I think I could probably adapt although, as I say, it will be a wrench to put stuff like the Blade Runner tin and steel books in a box in the attic!

Some good and valid points regarding the physical media aspect of films. I’m also a collector of Special Limited Editions - OMG R@RE!!!1111 but that was when those sort of things were special and I actually took pride in the little piece of plastic shaped like the film character I got with the film. The Koreans (and Japanese) were great pioneers of this and my collection is stuffed full of them - The Band of Brothers Military Pack being one that is stunning. Problem is, have I actually ever watched a single disc from the pack? God no! I love the series but the only time I’ve watched it is when it’s been on TV!

Anyway, my original comments were about the future and I really can’t see it going any way other than download delivery which means that picture/sound and content will be the prevailing reason for purchase.

Pity those poor workers in the factories dotted around China whose livelihoods will be impacted when the market for plastic figures shaped like Bruce Willis’ head dries up.
