I've read all of the books.

The franchise started with those first two movies (Ring &#38; Ring 2).
There wouldn't have been any sequels or remakes if it wasn't for those films. The Books were not the franchise.

Ah ha ha...

THIS ruined the ring franchise? Have you read any of the books? As much as I love the first two movies, the fucked over the Sadako character bad from the start.

Yeah I don't care much for the English dub although it is amusing, probably because I only discovered this hidden gem recently and went with the original language as my standard knee jerk reaction. It essentially confuses the story and character relationships with it's "if in doubt drop the f-bomb" mentality. In the original track it all seems more cohesive and the characters are more dignified without the constant (and not actually ever scripted) coarse language. The English dub is funny but the series is not really intended to be comedic, the tone is pretty dark with a little gallows humour. Also, this was never intended to be a longer series as it was an OVA (based on some novels apparently) which have larger budgets than TV but not the same as features, they are kind of like the equivalent of big budget TV mini series. If it had become a longer series the animation quality would almost certainly have taken a major hit...

Still I have to give credit where it's due for use of the hallowed term "dick splash"

Count me as a major Judge Dredd fan (I had 2000AD from issue one) who didn't see the new Dredd film at the pictures simply because of the 3D. It was a cynical marketing ploy that sank the film. I shall buy the Blu-ray next year and still save money on what the 3D ticket price would have been for my wife and I.

The positive word/reviews online really got me interested though- I'd still like to see news of a sequel getting made but its very unlikely. Shame.

Yeah, I had seriously thought Nolan might actually kill off Batman. It's certainly more final and perhaps fitting for the character.

I wonder if Warners want to keep playing in the Nolan universe without Nolan. Then again, could non fans accept someone other than Bruce Wayne being Batman? I think we'll see Blake again in some form, maybe even in comics.

In many ways the ending is the worst thing about Dark Knight Rises. I almost get the impression Nolan intended to kill Bruce Wayne but was under pressure from DC to go the other way. Some of it did seem very rushed/convenient (autopilot fixed/ Bat-signal fixed/ Blake 'gifted' the Batcave). Everything's fine until the nuke goes off and then suddenly its like the film rushes to set-up a fourth film out of nowhere. If I didn't know better I'd half expect Nolan to pull a Pete Jackson and say that DKR has enough material left over for another film.

I don't think you can have an ending like that by the same Director who has had ambiguous endings in other movies without thinking there is more than meets the eye. Nolan has said in interviews that memory in film is important and the ending is what makes you look back on the film and decide what is true.
Which is why I don't see it as out of nowhere as we have a scene specifically with Alfred referring to having a fantasy where he sees Bruce Wayne Happy earlier in this film.

We could also argue that escaping a 6 mile nuclear blast would be quite difficult for Batman.

I don't think it's meant to be ambiguous, I just think it's something some have projected alternate meanings on to -- largely because of <i>Inception</i>'s (deliberate) ambiguity.

<i>Inception</i> is all about dreams, imaginings, etc, so it makes sense that ending might be a fantasy. <i>TDKR</i> has none of that set up. But between Lucius discovering that Bruce had fixed the Bat's autopilot, Gordon discovering a replacement/new Bat-signal, Blake being given instructions to reach the cave (though that's not as definitive as the others -- you could argue Bruce planted those as a contingency much earlier), and Alfred actually seeing Bruce &#38; Selina in Florence, I think we're just meant to see it as he survived &#38; has gone off to have a life.

And even if one still wants to argue that's just an interpretation of what we see, it fits the story Nolan's been telling much, much better than an out-of-nowhere dream does.

Yes thats why the ambiguity annoys me a bit. You are expecting something to happen and end up doubting what you've seen. Some people think Alfred is having a dream, seeing Selina and Bruce together the way he earlier says he'd hoped to see Bruce away from Gotham. Its also a bit trite and simple considering the complexities of the earlier films and lack of romance earlier between Bats and the Cat. So some viewers read it that Bruce did die, set up Blake to replace him, and later a grief-stricken Alfred has a wish-fulfilment dream/fantasy. Other viewers see it literally as real, (Bruce goes off into the sunset with Selina and Blake takes his place) and nothing in the film really seems to argue either way.

The subjective ending suits Inception but a Batman trilogy deserved something definitive. Instead it almost seems to invite a fourth film. Oh well, I guess that would at least be a change from the inevitable reboot.
