I'd forgotten I'd recommended it to you Mike; you're certainly doing it justice!

I do like the Hammer 'Phantom'; it's probably my favourite version, but I'm a long time Herbert Lom fan, and then there's that lip-smacking cameo from Patrick Troughton which, for some reason, seems like it belongs in 'Monty Python &#38; The Holy Grail' ('Getcha rats 'ere! They wriggle, they bite. They're luvverly!)

A lot of people complained about the double-sided discs, problems playing and that sort of thing - I never had a glitch. The only movie I didn't like was Captain Clegg, mainly because I felt a bit cheated by the (guessable) narrative outcome. Other than that, this was one of the best DVD compilations ever!

With regard to 'Taste of Fear', there seems to be a fair chance this may get a R1 release later in the year. Sony are rumoured to be prepping a second Hammer box with 'The Gorgon' included - Taste of Fear would also seem a likely canditate.

It is a smashing set, John, and thanks again for shoving it under my nose originally. The quality of the transfers really is quite amazing, and the only 'duffer' I've seen so far is Phantom of the Opera (and even here, I think that's more down to personal taste).

Kiss of the Vampires was top drawer entertainment - really good fun. I would never have guessed at the ending...

'Taste of Fear' was announced as part of an impressive slate of Columbia owned films that were to be licensed to DD Home Entertainment last year...DDHE promptly went into administration, and that was well and truly scuppered.

There was some talk of the deal being revived under the new owners - Simply HE - but the last I heard was that they had failed to come to an agreement and Sony were considering releasing the titles in the UK themselves, possibly later this year.

Just to add my admiration of that R1 Hammer set - some folk's issues with the double-sided discs aside - it is indeed an absolute cracker both in the choice of films and their presentation.

Taste of Fear is a great film and I've been waiting for a disc of that for years - heard some time ago we were getting that in the UK imminently but have heard no more.

You're should be in for a good time with Kiss..., Mike!

'Nightmare' is the other psychological thriller in that Franchise set ('Maniac' would be a Columbia/Sony property) and yes, it's good, entertaining stuff with the added bonus of sporting another top class transfer.

<b>Mike's edit</b> - course it is. Slapped wrists all round. I'm watching <b>The Kiss of the Vampire</b> tonight - review to follow shortly, and agreed these really are top quality transfers.

Thanks for the great review. This is an entertaining if predicatable yarn. Not up to Taste of Fear (1960), but better than most of the other sub-diabolique Sangster/Hammer flicks. Terrific 2.35:1 cinematography. Incidentally, this film is actually copyrighted 1962, but sat on the shelf for a while (like many other Hammer films).

Probably will, Mike - I enjoyed both Paranoiac and Nightmare from that set (amongst most of the others) - as well as good story, characters and script, they were very well photographed and look fantastic in their proper ratio. Like Colin I actually appreciate these much more now than I did as a youngster.

Well summed up - Paranoiac comes from the R1 Hammer Horror Series boxset, which also contains <strike>Maniac</strike> Nightmare. If it's anything like this, I reckon I'm in for a forgettable yet good fun treat.
