Oh no! I forgot all about Excalibur, an all-time fave and featuring the lovely Helen Mirren in evil bitch mode.

Thanks for the comments, lads. Paul - I think the Rings movies showed the combination of lots of money and careful writing can make a good movie. Too often, these things are hopelessly preposterous, and end up looking tacky. Conan is definitely better than most in this respect.

I can't think of many fantasy films that work particularly well, for reasons I can't seem to pinpoint (at least not without putting in some effort that would probably be better spent elsewhere). Obviously the Rings movies happen to have hit the nail quite nicely, and maybe you could say the same about the Potter films? (I can't say as I'm not really a Potter fan; do they even count in the same genre?) Before that there's not much that's of real value, though I quite liked Excalibur and I liked most of the fantasy stuff Harryhausen worked on, primarily due to Harryhausen's work itself. I'm sure there's always been a wealth of great potential in fantasy that's rarely been taken advantage of (unless you know otherwise). Great fantasy is pretty much the exclusive domain of book-readers by the looks of it, which is a shame.
