You're right Ian, 'Wild Bill' is straight out of the top drawer.

Many thanks for the kind words, it's very encouraging. I'm hoping to get started on those Earp movies around the middle of April - after that I might just have a go at Mr Bonney.

I think I'd agree with you, Colin, that this is probably Hill's best film. It came in a period (late '70s/early '80s) when he produced a string of classics and it seemed he could do no wrong. Sadly things went pear shaped after Brewster's Millions and the good films became fewer and fewer (although he still produced some gems, Wild Bill is particularly good in my opinion).

I just want to say how much I've enjoyed this series of reviews and look forward to reading your views on the Wyatt Earp films (some real classics there and some of my personal favourite westerns). Maybe we'll see William Bonney get a similar appraisal in the future?

Thanks for that John. I do intend to pick it up soon as I have fond memories of the film.

My admiration for Phil Kaufman has increased quite a lot in recent years; I'd wholeheartedly recommend getting 'The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid' soon Colin, not only is it a very fine film indeed, but it's cheap and the transfer is excellent.

Thanks for the comment clydefro.
Sorry about The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid but I skipped over it temporarily since I don't have a DVD copy to hand at present and it's been way too many years since I last saw it to be able to write with confidence about it. However, I do intend to return to it at a later date just to round out the series.

As far as my preferences are concerned, I have enjoyed all of these movies I've been writing about but The Long Riders is easily my favorite. Now, I really enjoyed the recent Assassination so much so that it provided the inspiration for my recent posts. It's a very different film to Hill's and I find them hard to compare. But Brad Pitt was a much more interesting Jesse James than James Keach and Casey Affleck absolutely nailed Ford. The Long Riders is a movie that I've known and loved for years and years - it's stood the test of time while Assassination is still too new for me to form a definitive opinion.

You're skipping The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid then? I just watched it the other night after realizing I hadn't seen the film in awhile and never on DVD. I thought I'd be ready to go for your write-up. :) Also, do you prefer The Long Riders over the recent Assassination film, or just more than the three Fox releases?
