August DVD Purchases: Part I August 15, 2006

Like many DVD aficionados (read: sad losers) I have a long ‘want list’ of discs & box sets that I’d like to add to my collection.  Since I live in a region 2 country, many of the titles are region 1 versions which are impossible to find in stores – it’s actually illegal to sell them here.  So I regularly scour eBay to see if anyone is selling the titles I want, and every so often I grab a deal.  I also enjoy checking my local haunts for second-hand DVDs, where you can usually pick up good titles that have been mis-priced by people who don’t know better.

Here are some of my recent DVD purchases:

Die Hard Ultimate Collection
US Region 1
eBay: £8.20
I’ve been after this set for ages, and although many have passed me by on eBay, I finally grabbed one for a great price.  The 6-disc box set collects Die Hard: 5 Star Edition, Die Hard 2: Special Edition, & Die Hard with a Vengeance: Special Edition.  Although we’ve had identical region 2 releases for Die Hard 1 & 2 (in nice digipack packaging no less), our version of Die Hard 3 is cut to ribbons.  I’m surprised it wasn’t re-submitted for classification before our 6-disc box set was released, but it wasn’t, so I had to go state-side on this one.

Danny The Dog: Special Edition
Hong Kong Region 3
eBay: £2.99
Not an easy set to find on eBay, mainly because this movie was titled ‘Unleashed’ on release in the UK and US.  This Region 3 DVD has some different features that aren’t on our R2 version, but the biggest additions are the DTS-ES track and the very cool digipack packaging – check out these pictures.

Team America: World Police
UK Region 2
Second Hand £2.49
I picked this up because I wanted to see it again, even though the R1 unrated edition is technically better.  This is the slightly tamer theatrical version, but as long as it contains those genius songs I don’t care.

Desperate Measures / Dick
UK Region 2
Second Hand £1.99
Picked these up in a BOGOF deal.  I already owned the full-screen R1 version of Desperate Measures, but I’d been looking to replace it with the R2 anamorphic widescreen release.  I grabbed Dick because it was the only other £1.99 DVD in the offer that was an actual movie and had some special features on the disc.

Check out my Dick review here.
