Maybe the rest of what passes for Horror films today makes THE MIST seem better than what it really is, but I certainly appreciated the dark tone of the ending. Rare to see a film with an ending that recalls that of Carpenter's THE THING, and one that, like it or hate it, at least is assured of some debate.Too many horror films today are filled with horny teenagers and shots of bare-chested girls and gratuitous gore... its just boring. I mean, have you seen 2001 MANIACS? Good grief. That film was just an insult.

Hi Steve, thanks for your comment.

I think Sara was probably brooding over the magazine's cover stories on the films which (I would imagine) generated improved sales of the magazine. CINEFANTASTIQUE's editorial stance was actually refreshing, especially when compared to mags today- advertising revenue often seems dependent on good reviews these days. What I found interesting when re-reading it was how my views seem to mirror Freds, in that I prefer older films to much that is released today, just as he preferred 2001 to the then-new STAR WARS and CE3K. Perhaps its a generation-thing and the new cgi stuff just isn't my generation. Some of the current mindless stuff makes the 70s stuff seem postively Kubrickian.

Very nice post.

I remember the letter you mention, and Fred's response to it - if not word for word, then in their essence.

Fred simply thought science fiction could be more than mindless fun. Just because something was popular didn't mean it was above criticism. I never found anything hypocritical in that.

Am very much looking forward to seeing this - can't believe it bypassed my local cinema. All the reviews have been so good, I might even pick the dvd up full price - unheard of!

I couldn't agree more. It was only the rise of Asian horror a few years back, that gave me any hope for new original horror. But now, thanks to the excruciatingly bland American remakes (I will forever hold a grudge against the grudge remake), even those have lost their novelty. I'll stick to the old black & white Universal Horrors, and my new-found obsession with Mr Tod Slaughter.

I think this is an okay film. The raft is definately the best story but the other two were good fun IMO. The Hitchhiker is enjoyably nasty if a tad drawn out as you say.

I actually bought the original and the sequel, recently.

My rose tinted glasses were smashed after seeing "Creepshow". I found it extremely boring for the most part, with little, or nothing much happening. Why does someone who approaches a horror film wish to sit through a 10 minute dinner party sequence, for example?

I actually enjoyed the second one slightly more, if only for "The Raft" segment.

It's worth noting that DVD can look surprisingly good projected when both the equipment used and the source is of a higher standard (I'm not rich either by the way, just a very patient saver!). Sometimes I'll watch a VHS film just to remind myself how good we've got it nowadays - no doubt in a couple of years I'll be doing the same with a Digital Versatile Disc when HD becomes well embedded into my daily film-viewing habits.
