I'd also love to know what happened to that "Queen" edition of Drive that Refn talked about back near the beginning of the year. Things have gone very quiet since the original story came out:

(I did buy the current blu-ray anyway, just so I could watch the movie again - it completely holds up a second time)

I might agree with you. Too many films can be sensory overload. I haven't counted how many I have watched this year yet but looking at my notebook they do seem to have just blurred into one another. It's funny how people ask me what films I've seen recently and I have difficultly remembering. So either I watched too many or watched too many unmemorable films. Ones that stick in my mind this year though are 'Shame', 'Tyrannosaur' and 'We need to talk about Kevin'.

No probs mate, you are right. Yep, Aliens is full of such plotholes, and it annoys me when it is so well-praised as either a classic or the best of the Alien movies, while Prometheus is lambasted for same. I'm not going to pretend that Prometheus is exempt from plotholes but at least lets put all the films on a level playing field.

At the very least, Prometheus attempts to open up the mythology a little instead of being either another 7 little Indians (Alien/Alien 3) or Rambo wannabe (Aliens, AVP series).

"...the central conceit for one- the Company that directed the Nostromo to the derelict hear no more, but don’t simply direct another ship for another go, rather they ‘forget’ about it and fifty years later unwittingly wind up sending Terraformers there..."

Hmmm. Not entirely correct -- there was a scene where the exec explains that he took an "executive decision" and "it was a bad call, Ripley".

Not saying that Aliens wasn't stupid -- the chief "duh" moment for me was simply that they send down an entire unit of soldiers, while not even leaving a back-up, reserve unit or even a skeleton crew on the mother ship. I mean -- why? Why? Staff cutbacks? They can afford a Sularko, but can't afford anyone to crew the thing?

Sorry. Had to vent.

My wife saw her folks the other night and mentioned that we had seen this truly terrible film. Funny thing was, when she described the plot, her dad said "that sounds good!" and asked if we'd still got it. There's something irresistable about Nazi's on the moon I guess, but its so bad I guess its what rentals are for.

I look forward to your review!

I nearly bought this at one point (some retailer had an exclusive or a discount or something), but then realised I wasn't that fussed and it was probably poor anywhere.

And now it sounds so bad it's jumping straight onto my rental list!

Why I do this to myself I don't know...

You are right of course, but I still want to see it again on Blu-ray in October. I must be a sucker for punishment.

Still, regards Ridley and his control; I realise we will never know the truth, as Ridley has never been one to bite back at the hands that give him the money to play with. But I would be fascinated to have a candid interview with him, or read/watch one. Maybe it was indeed all down to him; maybe everyone was so happy to have him back doing sci-fi again no-one thought to question his decision-making (this is what happened to George Lucas with the prequels, I'm sure). I may be an apologist for Ridley generally, but I do think his constant Deckard-is-a-Replicant talk over the years was wrong and nonsensical, so I'm quite ready to accept that Ridley went bonkers for big bald spacemen and ruined Alien.

I'd just like to know, and hear Ridley's reasoning for why he went with Prometheus the way he did. Doubt any commentary would be so candid. But I'll still cut Ridley some slack for now on the slim hope he left the best part of the story for a Prometheus 2.

Regards no-one having the balls to argue with famous film-makers; Scott and Lucas aren't alone, Cameron has done dodgy work and it does make me wonder if some of this is going on right now with Peter Jackson turning The Hobbit into three movies.
