Courtroom FEA: FEA = Finite Element Analysis

June 13th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Steve Roensch As a product liability professional, it is important that you know what Finite Element Analysis (FEA) can do for you. If you don’t, your adversary might. Whether you serve plaintiffs, defendants or both, you’re probably already familiar with FEA. Simply put, if a loss, injury or death is due to something bending or breaking, FEA can help explain the failure. An experienced FEA expert can determine the stresses and displacements in the failed part. When compared to industry standards, earlier designs and competitive designs, this often identifies the cause of failure, and hence the responsible party. As in any field, your choice of an expert is important in making your case. It’s not unusual for an inexperienced FEA analyst to generate incorrect results; this is both a warning to the wise and a strategy for dealing with the other side’s expert. FEA results lend themselves to color plots and animations, making conveying the key concepts to the jury much easier. Many companies use FEA, for good reason. FEA of critical design components, be they in the early design stage or on the engineering change list, can greatly enhance the overall product quality. This is accomplished by ensuring that the design can meet deformation, stress, vibration and/or temperature specifications for specified worst case configurations. FEA can also reduce product cost significantly, especially if applied early in the design cycle. Analysis results identify critical areas which carry the bulk of stresses caused by deformation or vibration, as well as less important areas in which a material reduction may be possible. The number of prototypes required can usually be reduced. Finally, the cost of a field repair or replacement will usually be many times the cost of a finite element analysis. The Controversy Behind Sunless Tanning Pills

June 9th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Ken Marlborough For convenience and ease of use, people may be tempted to turn to the sunless tanning pill for an effortless tan. Tanning pills are controversial and thought to be unsafe. The FDA, in fact, has not approved most tanning pills, and they can be difficult to get in the U.S. Besides some severe side effects, the sunless tanning pill may not even work at all, depending on the brand used. The ingredients of a sunless tanning pill will vary, and in many instances, there is no clear ingredient breakdown on the label. A sunless tanning pill will generally contain either caretenoid pigments or tyrosine, or they will prove to be nothing more than hyped up multivitamins. Other ingredients vary from pill to pill, and often they are nothing more than nutritional supplements. The pills work by altering the skin’s pigmentation, though not always in the way one would expect or desire for a tan. Some simply turn the skin orange rather than tan. Others end up with the pigment placed unexpectedly in the body, producing less-than-perfect results. The caretenoid tanning pill works by depositing pigment in fat layers just under the skin, which colors it. Unfortunately, the amount of these substances that are required to be taken is high enough as to have been deemed unsafe by the FDA. Tyrosine, another base for sunless tanning pills, is a non-essential amino acid that helps skin cells produce melanin. There’s no need to supplement for it, which means that pills containing tyrosine are not up to their manufacturers’ claims. While having a great tan without effort and risk of skin damage can be a wonderful feeling, and while the convenience of a sunless tan can be immense, there are some methods that are just not worth the risks to tanners’ health. The sunless tanning pill would be one of these methods. Tanners looking for a convenient, safe, sunless tan would do well to look elsewhere for that golden glow. Sunless Tanning Info provides detailed information about sunless tanning lotion, booths, sprays, salons, and pills, as well as reviews of best sunless tanning products and methods. New Generation Of Financial Information Systems Makes Crunching Numbers Faster And Easier

June 5th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Jack Palone In what seems like only a few short years, fiscal selective information systems (FIS) have evolved from simple, back-office support systems into fully integrated solutions that can handle everything from payroll to accounts receivable and gross cycle management. But such increased functionality would not be possible without the ability to combine disparate databases into a single source of entropy that can be mined at multiple levels. The importance of data mining quickly became apparent to corporate executives at James Edmund Scripps Wellness in San Diego, who had been working with six separate databases before upgrading to a newer variant of Dawn Approach Coach/Affected role Fiscal Handler from Boca Raton, Fla.-founded Eclipsys Corp. Edward Wyllis Scripps currently operates five acute care facilities totaling nearly 1,400 beds, two medical groups with 14 outpatient clinics, a home health agency and a health plan. Today, yearly revenues average $1.35 billion, which is a big turnaround from a few years ago when posted operating losses in 2000 and 2001 totaling approximately $26 1000000 and $22 one thousand thousand and respectively. In an effort to bolster their bottom line, devised a number of key strategies, not the least of which was drastically changing their methods of charge and reimbursement. “A couple of years ago we moved away from capitated risk to fee-for-service risk,” says David Ferdinand Julius Cohn, vice president of patient services. Additionally, since each infirmary had been running its own Eclipsys FIS, the organization made the decision to rise these 13–old systems by installing an enterprisewide FIS. Realized similar gains in efficiencies, although not all were directly related to the adoption of a new software solution. admits that a significant portion of gain was due to process improvements in recovering underpayments from third-party payers. “We look at trends by types of underpayments and develop strategies to work together with our payer partners,” he says, adding that collection of underpayments in financial 2003 was 9 percent above 2002, amounting to More than $15.4 meg. The auditing of Thomas More than 100,000 accounts during outpatient tax income charge-capture audits yielded Sir Thomas More than $10 a million in additional charges. Furthermore, monthly cash collections for 2004 exceeded those for 2003 by $10.4 , while net taxation between 2001 and 2003 increased by $44 as a result of improvements in charge capture, coding, reduced bad debt and incremental tax revenue recovery. In addition, operating profitability, during that same period, improved by $40 . A focus on reversing the losses incurred during 2000 and 2001 also led to establish a systemwide cycle steering committee, as well as multidisciplinary teams on the level so that “everybody would be on the same page,”. Drake adds that coordinating the steering committee and teams helped define how the centralized business office could best support the needs of each facility. Those weekly meetings covered a wide range of topics, she says, including coverage, interim and obstacles to discharge. But went even further in overhauling its strategies. It developed a -dedicated claims processing team within Kaiser’s regional claims center in Pasadena, Calif., which reduced the claims backlog by $6. It outsourced unpaid commercial and PPO outpatient claims to QuadraMed. “We wanted our people to stay focused on higher-dollar claims,” explains . Drake also says, “We did an awful lot of work on appeals by working with our payers and improving our contracts.” There’s no question that upgrading to Dawning Memory access Director/Patient role Managing director variation 11.3 improved the organization’s efficiency in accessing and analyzing data. A major driver in that rising slope was the EDI transaction set requirements mandated by HIPAA, says. Also, needed to streamline its Medicare process, since Medicare accounts for about 35 percent to 40 percent of its business. Due to time constraints resulting from the HIPAA deadline, was unable to install a Web- edition of the Eclipsys software, choosing instead the character- interpretation that could ruin on a UNIX platform using a cache system, says Drake. However, plans are already in the works to ascent to reading 11.4. About The Author

The True Meaning of Alternative Medicine

May 31st, 2008 by cyndelazure

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jay_Moncliff] Jay Moncliff Alternative medicine is a type of therapeutic practice that is not considered to be a part of traditional or conventional medical treatment. People use alternative medicine instead of using traditional medical treatment. This is often because they feel it is a natural way to get better. There are many types of alternative medicine. Some are covered by medical insurance, but most are not. Some forms of alternative medicine that may be covered are chiropractic and osteopathic therapy. These forms of alternative medicine are widely used. There are other forms of alternative medicine that are not as widely used, but are becoming more popular by the minute. These are: massage therapy, therapeutic touch, folk medicine, herbal medicine, special diets, homeopathy, music therapy, aromatherapy, naturopathy, faith healing, and new age healing. There are also some non-western forms of alternative medicine such as: Chinese medicine, gi gong, reiki, and ayarveda. There are some less commonly practiced forms of alternative medicine as well. One is called biofield therapy. This is a form of alternative medicine that works with your so called “energy fields” to heal you. Another is bioelectrical magnetic therapy. This alternative medicine uses pulse and magnetic fields to heal you. Alternative medicine is quite popular for people who are terminally ill. Many AIDS and cancer patients prefer it. An example of this is a cancer patient who uses alternative medicine instead of receiving traditional chemotherapy or radiation therapy. People also use alternative medicine to heal ailments such as back pain or migraines. Instead of traditional painkillers, the patients would use aromatherapy, sound therapy or herbal therapy. Alternative medicine is even used on animals. Have you ever seen the movie “The Horse Whisperer?” That was about a form of alternative medicine used on an animal. Acupuncture, herbal therapy, and others have also been used on animals. The last thing you should know is that there is no scientific evidence that alternative medicine is effective. There have been no scientific studies to prove if they are safe or if they work for the diseases or ailments they are used for. Before using an alternative medicine, talk to your doctor, make sure your doctor feels it is safe and will not harm you. There are many different kinds of alternative medicines to choose from. Now that you understand it a bit better, you can decide if it is right for you. For more information talk to your doctor or research it online. With careful research, you may find one that is right for you. Fertilizers - What you Need to Feed Your Lawn

May 29th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Linda J Bruton Just like humans need food, water and shelter to survive, lawns depend on certain elements to live, sixteen to be exact. Most of these elements are already found naturally in the environment, but several others need to be added to your lawn. Adding fertilizer with these three elements, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, does the job. Before you run out to the store to purchase a complete fertilizer, or, one that contains all three, it is important to understand why your lawn’s livelihood depends on it. Nitrogen- This is possibly the most important element your lawn needs. It makes the grass grow and gives it its green color. It will also allow for more density, thick shoots, and sturdy growth, thus creating an environment that will naturally fight off pests and bugs. Potassium- Since you can’t toss bananas in your yard, your best bet for this mineral is to use fertilizer! Potassium enhances your lawn’s ability to resist disease, drought, wear and cold weather. Phosphorus- This is used to encourage strong grass root growth. Most fertilizers you will find in your local home and garden stores will contain all three of these elements. However, there are different amounts of each. This is reflected in a three-digit number, such as 30-10-10, which tells the percentage of each in this order: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These blends will serve different purposes. For instance, more potassium in blends are good for winterization. The factors you need to consider are grass type, climate, time of season and soil type. Once you know what your needs are, you will be able to determine the right combination of these elements. An additional way to scan your needs is determine the current levels of these nutrients in your soil. This can be done through a simple pH test. In addition to variation in percentages of the key elements, there are also different types of fertilizers to consider. There are four major options that will greet you in the fertilizer aisle: Granular (slow and fast-release), Liquid, Synthetic and Organic. Granular fertilizers are perhaps the most popular, probably due to their ease in use and duration. Since these are dry, they are much easier to spread. Granular fertilizers can come in a slow time-release formula, which provides fertilization over two to six months. This is an efficient choice for homeowners, as it will not need another application for months to come. Granular is also available in fast-release, and although applied in the same manner, the nutrients are released quicker and work better in cold weather. This method also costs less. However, grass burn can occur and there will be a greater need for watering. Liquid fertilizers are just as the name says- in liquid form. These are applied by attaching a hose and nozzle to a spray bottle. The contents of the bottle are usually in concentrated form, thus the need to mix with the water. If you can use a hose, this is an easy method, more so than spreading granular around the yard. Also, since this a liquid, nutrients are available immediately to the roots of your vegetation. Herbicides can also be added or applied during this treatment. But, since the results are immediate, applications will have to be repeated more often than granular, and since liquid is more expensive to begin with, it can be more costly. Synthetic fertilizers are usually manufactured chemically, hence being called synthetic. These engineered fertilizers offer immediate release of nutrients, and make lawns green. They simply penetrate the soil quicker. However, they are not natural, and many argue that lawns should be treated naturally. Applications of synthetic fertilizer needs to be redone more often, as results don’t last as long. They can also burn your lawn if not applied in a proper manner. Finally, organic fertilizers are made from once living organisms and their bi-products. These are applied to the lawn by spreaders, rakes and even by hand. Since this a totally natural fertilizer, the organics tend to break down slow when releasing nitrogen. They will improve the texture and density of your lawn, especially when added to soil or lakebed sand. There are some drawbacks however, including a foul smell in the case of manures. Also, these soils tend to have more nitrogen than other elements. In summary, when choosing a fertilizer, you need to consider many things: The current nutrition of your lawn, how much money you want to spend, how much labor you want to invest in application- initial and repeats, as well as personal preference. But with the spurt in technology, choices keep growing as more combinations are being introduced. Reading the Beach: A Necessary Skill

May 25th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Muhammad Ismail The ability to Read the Beach is a skill that takes a lifetime to perfect. It is however a necessary skill to acquire as it effectively informs us where to place our bait and increases our chances of catching a fish. The ability to read the beach allows us to identify sloughs, highways, gutters and currents just by viewing the wave action. Tidal action, currents and the wind cause forces that push bodies of water towards the shore forming waves along the way. The waves push upwards as it passes over sand bars. Sand Bars are bodies of sand that are not fixed and run along the sea shore. Just as sand dunes are affected by the wind, sand bars are affected by the action of the water. The landscape under the water is more or less similar to the beach associated with it. Notice the landscape while standing on the shoreline with your back facing the sea. In most cases the landscape of the seabed will be similar. Looking out to sea you will notice that the swell is more or less constant. As you scan closer to shore you will find that the swell becomes higher and waves begin to form. Do not follow the waves to shore just yet. Zoom in to this area and you will notice that waves are constantly being formed in that particular spot. Okay, now start focusing to the right and left and you will find that the first wave is being formed at a similar distance all along the beach. This allows us to draw a mental picture of the sand bar pushing up the swell that forms the first wave. Now follow the first wave to the next swell and you will find the next sand bar running along the beach. You may find three or more sand bars. The seabed in between the sand bars are the lower points of the shoreline and are called the Highways. The location of the sand bars remain the same only for a day or two. They are changing constantly depending on the forces exerted on them by tidal and wave action. The only constant is that as long as there are waves there are sand bars. Thus far we have learned that water moves towards the shore forming waves as it passes over sand bars. We notice that this water travels towards the seashore but we cannot see the water return to the ocean. No waves are formed facing the opposite direction. This is because water arrives on the surface and returns to the ocean along the sea bed causing a current commonly called the backwash or rip currents. The strong force of the backwash literary rips through weak points in the sand bars forming drains or gutters. At this stage, just by looking out to sea, we are able to isolate the number of sand bars and their shapes allowing us to pinpoint the highways inbetween. We also know that the rip currents break the sand bars at their weakest points. Identifying the gutters are also very important. All we have to do is to take a closer look at the swell as it forms the first wave rolling over breaking into the highway. Scanning along this line you will find areas where the waves are not breaking but remain a mere swell. These are the gutters and drains. Since the sand bars are washed away at these points, there is nothing to push the swell up to cause the wave. The highways between the sand bars offer predatory fish a safe passage while on the lookout for food. Like any predator, its survival factor lies in the efficiency of the hunt. These predators or as we fishermen call them Game Fish lie in wait at the intersections were the backwash cuts the sand bars. The rip currents wash little fish and other food practically into the jaws of the gamefish which lay in ambush at these points. Muhammad Ismail is a simple South African who is passionate about fishing. Flower- the Story of Evolution

May 22nd, 2008 by cyndelazure

By John Gibb Flowers are the Natural beauties sent as a Gift by Nature to the World. They add fragrance, briiliance and beauty to the surroundings. The History of the Flowers in this Earth must go to the day when the Plants emerged in the World. Scientific research have shown that the Plants are in this World for the past more than 425 Million years and they have developed from their primituve form of Spores. The seeds for the Plants came in the primitve form as spores the small copies of themselves that can grow in other places. The Plants began to develop protection for the spores and thus came the seeds and there came into being the assured way of propagation and systematic reproduction by following regular Life cycles. The Flowers must have appeared during this stage and the earliest fossil proof of actual Flowers appears only 130 million years ago. But we do not have clear proof of how and when the Flowers developed for the first time as the fossil desposits do not give enough proof in this direction. The father of the theory of Evolution Charles Darwin himself is persplexed over this issue and calls this an abominal Mystery. It is generally assumed that the function of Flowers, from the start, was to involve other Animals in the reproduction process. Pollen should be taken to other places and for this the assistance of other living beings are necessary and it may not be possible without giving any other benefit. The Plants in some Islands developed sudden, fully developed appearance of Flowers and used them to develop a highly specialized relationship with some specific Animals and Birds. This type of specialized relationship with another Animal bearing pollen from one plant to another has resulted in both the plant(s) and their partners developing a high degree of specialization. Likewise, the next stage of the Flower the Fruits are used in plant reproduction that comes from the enlargement of parts of the Flower itself and is a tool which depends upon animals wishing to eat it, and thus scattering the seeds it contains. The hard proof as to the existence of Flowers about 130 million years ago, is available though circumstantial evidence we know that they did exist up to 250 million years ago. Flowers are genetically just an adaptation of normal Leaf and stem components on Plants, and the most primitive Flowers are thought to have both Male and Female parts on the same flower and to be dominated by the Female part. In later stages of evolution, Flowers grew more advanced, some, with a much more specific number and design, and with either specific sexes per Flower or plant. We see that Flower evolution continues even today; that the Modern Flowers have been influenced by humans to such a degree that many of them cannot be pollinated in Nature. John Gibb is the owner of flower sources

A Guide to Finding Legal Free Ringtones

May 20th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Craig_Thornburrow]Craig Thornburrow Many web sites claim to offer free ringtones, and most of them are legitimate, but there are a couple of issues that seekers of free ringtones should keep in mind. First, some of these sites are either outright scams or at best disingenuous–They may have free ringtones, but they’re only available if you buy something else or pay for a membership first. The second potential problem with free ringtones is that the purveyor may be using private material such as movie themes and popular songs without paying royalties to the rights holder. Many sites that offer free ringtones do so not because they love the public and want to make sure their ringtone needs are met, but rather as a lure to draw them in for nefarious purposes. This issue was highlighted most directly in 2005 when a judge ordered the shutdown of several web sites that were luring web surfers with promises of free ringtones, and then installing malicious software on their machines. Some sites that offer free ringtones may not go this far, but they may feature annoying pop up ads and other offensive content Many sites may offer free ringtones without installing spyware or inundating visitors with ads, but they still may present a legal issue. Most popular music is protected by copyright law, and any use of the music, such as in free ringtones, requires that royalties be paid to the artist. While there are many good sources of free ringtones, it is worthwhile to read independent reviews of the sites before visiting them. If the free ringtones offered are popular songs or file themes, make sure that the website pays royalties to the artist. Be safe, and have fun while hunting for free ringtones! Flower Girl Dresses for Your Perfect Wedding

May 16th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Janet Donahue Are you planning on having Flower Girls in your wedding? Or do you have children in
the family who you would love to include on your most special day? Whether you are blending two families together, have darling nieces
or have a friend who has a sweet daughter who you want to be a part of
the festivities, there are many ways to include children in your wedding. Three Roles for Flower Girls The most popular position for children is Flower Girl. However, there are really three distinct roles for little girls in your wedding which one(s) appeal to you most? Flower Girl a child attendant wearing a child-like dress in either Tea or Formal length who usually carries a basket of petals the she may sprinkle on the aisle or path announcing the arrival of the Bride. Miniature (or Junior) Bride a child dressed like a bride. This role comes from medieval times as a decoy to lure evil spirits away from the Bride to avoid a curse on the marriage. She may wear a miniaturized version of the Brides gown (perhaps the Brides gown manufacturer or custom dressmaker can accommodate) or a wedding-style gown complete with train and flowing headpiece. She carries a bouquet. Junior Brides Maid while not really an official title, older girls certainly prefer this designation. These young ladies are usually dressed to coordinate more with the Brides Maids rather than a little girls dress. This can be tricky, but there are wonderful choices for this age groups dresses in Pre-Teen and young Teen. You can select one or all! Many brides today are opting for several children in their wedding party. The benefits are obvious since the children are so easy to please with the styles you select for them to wear. And their attire can be beautifully coordinated. Color is an important key.
Selecting the Colors White or ivory dresses are the most popular (always coordinated with the color of the Brides gown). But color can be gorgeous! There are many alternatives; consider the following: A white or ivory dress and add a sash in a color close to the color of the Brides Maids dresses. It may be possible to order extra fabric from the company where you order the Brides Maids dresses to have sashes made up. Or, you can select a similar color from a childs dress company - matching perfectly is not that important so you can choose something similar or contrasting (see below). Another option is using a wide double-faced satin ribbon from a fabric store in a great color for the sashes. A white or ivory flower-petal filled dress. These are classic flower girl dresses! Select flower petals in the color of the flowers everyone will carry or the color of the Brides Maids dresses. You can even add several color petals to these dresses (they always come with an opening to add or remove petals). It is not necessary to have exactly matching petals since the fabric of the dress holding the petals is considered a buffer that diffuses color and can help many different shades go well together. Order Flower Girl dresses from the same company at the same time from the same dye lot as the Brides Maids dresses. This is the only way to match purchased dresses. Have all the dresses Flower Girls and Brides Maids made custom from the same fabric from the same dye lot to insure a match. Select a beautifully coordinating color for the Flower Girls. A dark navy blue theme wedding could look gorgeous with little ones in a lighter shade of blue while burgundy weddings may look stunning with pink — or dress the children in the color of the flowers everyone will be carrying. Any of these approaches can produce beautiful results and gorgeous photographs for your memories. Should You Commoditize Your Worth in a Relationship?

May 14th, 2008 by cyndelazure

By Brooke Brimm We live in a capitalist society, and in this kind of society everything is viewed as a commodity. We view our wallet size, our body size, our house size, our education level, and our level of attractiveness as commodities within relationships. Many times in relationships we base our worth and the worth of our mates on capitalist principles. We may say or think I know I couldnt get a man that is attractive because I am not attractive or I can get any mate I want because I look damn good. Now, I am not nave enough to believe that things like beauty, prestige, and wealth have not played a part in keeping long lasting relationships together. However, if we make the mistake of confusing superficial attributes with substance we may pay a huge price. I am not just referring to the lost dollars, the lost property, and/or the loss of time with children that two superficial people may experience when they have to part. The bigger price tag comes from the damage to your spirit and your soul. One consequence of viewing ourselves as commodities can be distrusting another who loves us just the way we are because we do not think we measure up to societys standard of beauty or wealth. Another is missing out on love from someone who we think doesnt have the right commodities. Countless times I have heard women and men talk about bringing something to the table” when referring to relationships. Since when did love become a business? I do understand that when a man and women join in marriage they have the opportunity to build a life together and a byproduct of that is financial gain. However, in my opinion, when they join it should always be about a mutual love and respect they have for each other. Otherwise, the union will be headed to a sure demise. When my husband and I met, we were both very broke, one of us was in school, one was not. We both had questionable credit, and neither of us had a car. I was young, very shapely, and very attractive. Prior to meeting him I had used what some might call my assets to date men that had more money than I. However, when I met him I knew immediately that he was a man of substance and value, and I fell in love. Once we married we worked together to build things like credit, and businesses. We both know that if those things go away, our love won’t crumble because our relationship wasnt built on those things. If we strive to be the best we can be internally and externally, then we can have faith that we will attract someone of similar substance. We do not have to limit ourselves to what society dictates to us. Love is about compatibility, trust and respect. We can love anyone we want, once we release the chains society places on us. Brooke Brimm has a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling and 8 years of experience in the field of Human Science. She has been married since 1993 and has two beautiful daughters.
