Comment on #93: Letters From Iwo Jima (2006) by Flags of Our Fathers (2006) | 100 Films in a Year

[...] It’s been two years since I reviewed the second in Clint Eastwood’s 2006 double bill of World War II films; thanks to the machinations of my DVD rental site, it’s taken this long to see the first. In a somewhat innovative move, the pair examine both sides of the battle for Iwo Jima: Letters from Iwo Jima from the (losing) Japanese perspective, while Flags of Our Fathers shows the (victorious, obviously) American view. I found Letters to be a fair effort, if undeserving of some of the praise and nominations it garnered, but the consensus seems to have it that this first half isn’t as good.
Man, is this a matter of question? "Phantasm" is the most impressive and compelling batman movie ever made.

I don't know whether it's just me or if perhaps everyone else encountering problems with your website.

It appears as if some of the written text within your content are running off
the screen. Can someone else please provide feedback and let me know
if this is happening to them as well? This may be a problem
with my web browser because I've had this happen before. Kudos

Interesting notes. I often wondered about the end. How did they get away so easy a quick agaist odds and had no one to chase them off? Of course the other under logical (forgive my poor term here) scense are also this way in this film. However, this set aside believe this movie did its tole on the younger generation as I remember when this movie came out and I was about 10 at the time and could not see it, but the other kids got to see it. It became one of my favorites due to this and the nature of it being a "scrappy naration and screen play" was the reason for people to like it, cuase they figured they could do something like this and we played out the movie, or at least tried to, as kids. The legend of Billy the Kid became a icon for me as I began my fasination with the Old West. For me, despite the things said here, it was a "classic" and a style all its own for a generation of younger people. For that reason alone it caused the spin-off of the even more illogical sequel where Billy The Kid lives a full life...its roots in this earned it it's own distiction as a different western of a more modern time... Thanks.

Weird, I was absently flicking channels late last night, watched a bit of Firefox and then the last twenty minutes of Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars, and then fell upon this odd-looking movie. Wondered what the hell I was watching and thinking how dangerous flicking channels late at night can be, went to bed. Well now I know what that strange film was!

I picked up Lost Weekend last week, haven't seen it yet- my wife is a Wimbledon nut so I won't see much of anything for a fortnight. It's a Billy Wilder film I ever never seen, so I'm going to savour it.

Hope you enjoy John Carter as much as I did- lower your expectations and you may be very surprised. That probably sounds odd but in these days of hype (positive and negative) on everything, it helps. I think there was some kind of feeding frenzy on John Carter. Anyway, I look forward to your thoughts.
